Dr. David Stewart and his wife, Betty, moved to Oakdale, IL when David got a job at Memorial. They had two children, Dan Stewart and Paul Stewart. Betty was very devoted to her sons. Betty and David had adopted Dan, unbeknownst to them, Dan's biological mother was Ellen Lowell. David became best friends with Bob Hughes.
Betty died of pneumonia. Eventually David married Ellen Lowell and Ellen got to be mother to her son, Dan. David and Ellen had two daughters, Carol Ann (Annie) Stewart and Dawn (Dee) Stewart.
Dan Stewart secretly married Susan Burke. Susan soon became pregnant but miscarried. They drifted apart and Dan fell in love with Liz Talbot. Paul Stewart fell in love with Liz also. When Liz became pregnant with Dan's child, Paul agreed to marry her to give the baby a name. Paul didn't know who the father was. Liz gave birth to a daughter, Betsy. Liz later became pregnant by Paul, but miscarried.
Susan became pregnant again, but miscarried when she fell down a flight of stairs. Susan flirted with Dr. John Dixon to make Dan jealous, but John refused to play Susan's games. Dan tried to drown his sorrows by drinking. Susan blackmailed Dan into staying married to her, saying she'd reveal who Betsy's real father was.
Susan took care of Betsy quite often, as Liz wasn't well from a nervous breakdown. Betsy became attached to Susan and Dan - more to them than Liz and Paul. Liz finally told Paul that she never really loved him and they divorced. Paul later died of a brain tumor. He never found out that Betsy was his brother's child.
During one of Dan's weak moments, Susan seduced him. She became pregnant and had a daughter, Emily.
Susan returned to work and fell in love with Dr. Bruce Baxter. She granted Dan a divorce. Bruce didn't like children, so Susan gave temporary custody of Emily to Dan. After Susan and Bruce married, Bruce told her he had had a vasectomy. Susan annulled the marriage, feeling she had no real future with Bruce.
Susan found a drinking buddy and someone who really loved her, Kevin Thompson. They got engaged but Susan felt he wasn't helping her to stay sober, so she broke it off. He went on to marry Sandy McGuire, Bob Hughes' second wife, although he still carried a torch for Susan. He died after he got into a car accident while drunk. His liver was damaged from drinking and the doctor's couldn't stop the bleeding.
Now that he was divorced, Dan married Liz Talbot. Liz died in a freak accident soon thereafter, though. She fell up the stairs and ruptured her liver. On her deathbead, Liz revealed to Dan that he was Betsy's father. Dan took Emily and Betsy and moved to England, hoping to become a responsible father to his daughters.
When Dan moved back to Oakdale, Susan was dating Mark Galloway. Betsy still didn't know that Dan was her father. Susan and Dan waged a custody fight over Emily. Mark, who didn't like children, testified against Susan and Susan lost. Dan fell in love with Kim. Susan tried to drown her sorrows in drink and in bed with Jay Stallings. Susan and Dan got a little closer when Emily battled bacterial meningitis. Kim was then married to John Dixon and planned on divorcing him to be with Dan. During a tornado she fell and ended up with amnesia, not remembering she was in love with Dan! She gradually got her memory back though. John and Susan did their best to keep Dan and Kim apart, Dan even saw Valerie Conway for awhile, but they eventually reunited and married. John Dixon revealed to Betsy, at age 14, that Dan was her father. After awhile she learned to accept it. Kim and Dan married in 1977 and in 1979 Dan died of a brain tumor.
Dee Stewart fell in love with Beau Spencer, but at that time he only had eyes for Annie Stewart, Dee's sister. Annie and Beau married. Beau later had an affair and Annie divorced him. Annie fell in love with a married doctor, Doug Campbell. She tried to focus on Jeff Ward though, who was also interested in her. Doug eventually left town.
Dee got engaged to John Dixon, but was in love with Brad Hollister. Annie also fell in love with Brad. Brad was in love with Dee, but he saw that Dee and John were getting close. When Dee and John got engaged, Brad, hurt, turned to Annie. They married, but soon thereafter Brad confessed to Dee that he was still in love with her. Dee asked him not to hurt Annie. When Annie thought she was pregnant, John and Dee married. John did all he could to keep Dee away from Brad. Eventually Annie did become pregnant with Brad's child. When Annie heard that Brad was in love with Dee, Annie left him. She lost the baby.
Dee and Brad eventually made love, but Dee knew Brad wasn't the man for her as he was very greedy. John and Dee divorced and in 1983 Dee left town, taking a job in New York.
Annie and Jeff Ward fell in love and married. Annie gave birth to quadruplets, two girls and two boys. They named them Lowell, Gregory, Nancy and Maria. In 1984 Jeff was offered a job at a hospital out of town and he and Annie and their children left Oakdale.
