Jerry ver Dorn was born in Sioux City, IA on November 23. He moved frequently while growing up, as his father was a salesman. He attended Moorehead State University and planned on becoming an English teacher. He became involved in the theater and appeared in productions of Black Elk Speaks and Man and Superman. By his work in Man and Superman he was offered the role of Ross Marler on Guiding Light. He joined Guiding Light in March 1979.
In 1993 Jerry was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. After treatment, the cancer returned in later 1994. He once again went through treatment. Currently he is cancer-free.
Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Beth, on June 4, 1977. They have two sons, named Jacob (born in 1983) and Peter (born in 1985). Jerry is 5'11" tall and has blue eyes and brown hair.
