In My Opinion, GL seems to have a problem dealing with the subject of disabilities. They go from one extreme to the other. I'm very pleased with the way Abby is portrayed. While she does have a major disability, her deafness, she is not shown as a whining little girl who needs a BIG, STRONG MAN to chase away all the bad things in life. Lord knows, Rick tries to fill that role. Abby is the exception to the rule. Michael Zaslow is stricken with a disease that is degenerative so what do the writers do...get rid of him and find a healthy actor to take over. Nice move guys. Doing that closed the book on a wonderful angle for the writers to showcase Roger. But then again, they're the ones getting the big bucks while I'm sitting here on a Saturday afternoon typing into the Internet. The worst offender of all (PULLING UP SOAPBOX) is Michelle. To hide her blindness like it was a pimple on prom night is both annoying and insulting. Who can really believe that Michelle is totally blind, yet no one else around here seems to have the slightest clue she's having a problem. A disability, while traumatic, is not a skeleton to be hidden in the closet. Michelle should stop with the PLUM bit (Poor Lil Ol Me) and start facing the reality of her conditioin. Sending her to the Blind institute is a good start, hope the writers don't drop the ball on this one. In My Opinion, someone needs to have a little talk with the writers about having a community where not everyone is in perfect health |
