"Honest storytelling was of great importance to Douglas Marland, and he would say it again and again. It doesn't have to be flamboyant, it can be something as simple as the eternal triangle, but it doesn't come from contrivance, it comes from character" The following excert was taken from an article written about the late Mr. Marland, former GUIDING LIGHT and AS THE WORLD TURNS scribes. Today, this August 11th, I accidentally caught the first five minutes of GUIDING LIGHT, and I was so drawn by the introspective dialogue and wonderful acting that I watched most of the episode. For someone who hasn't watched GUIDING LIGHT faithfully since the death of Maureen Baur, that says a lot. For decades, GUIDING LIGHT has had a major advantage over most other shows: good acting. Teamed with writers who spin tales about interpersonal and intrapersonal conflicts, the drama truly shined as a trailblazer. I'd be the first to admit the show isn't what it used to be (what show is these days, excluding Y&R). But the potential is still there. "[Douglas Marland's] challenge was to keep the characters true. He looked for the emotional truth, the conflict from within. Loyalty, family roots, dignity and lack of prejudice -- he carried these traits with him in and out of the stories he weaved, and that was his genius."
