1998 Soap Opera Awards Review

Well ATWT and GL fans, another year of Soap Opera [Digest] Awards has ended. Here's a recap of what you may have missed, along with my opinion about the show.

The good news is this. GL fans, Laura Wright (Cassie) won for favorite new character. She's well deserving of the award. Our own online poll voted her as favorite newcomer overwhelmingly. Executive Producer Paul Rauch couldn't have chosen a better sister for Reva.

Phillip and Harley (Grant Aleksander and Beth Ehlers) were chosen as favorite new couple. Another well-deserved award. Pharley is extremely popular and this paring has paid off for fans. Among many other co-stars, Beth Ehlers thanked Beth Chamberlin for being the best third a triangle could have. Grant remembered to thank the fans (which, in my opinion, is who they all should have thanked since it was the fans who voted for them). Grant carried Beth off the stage.

ATWT didn't win any awards except the editor's award. This was given to Kathryn Hays and Don Hastings (Kim and Bob). The scenes they showed were very touching. It was presented to them by co-stars Kelley Menighan-Hensley and Jon Hensley.

GL's clip showed couples, not missing anyone's favorites I don't think.

Now for the bad news. First, ATWT's clip. Talk about totally out of touch with the majority of fans. It showed Molly and Holden kissing and ended with Molly barging in on Holden and Lily's vows. Will TPTB ever get it?

It was ironic that General Hospital won for best show, when their executive producer was behind the balloting controversy. Most of the awards went to GH or DOOL. Judi Evans Luciano (ex-Beth, GL) did win an award. Maybe it's just me, but I could no longer picture her as Beth, she seems to have changed so much. She is a wonderful actress and her clip was great (she's now on Another World).

I can dis Days of Our Lives, after all, I am an ATWT and GL devotee, but Drake Hogestyn (an actor from DOOL) did it for me by insulting Soap Opera Digest, the magazine behind the awards. (They dropped the "Digest" from the award name a year or two ago). When introducing SOD editor Lynn Leahey before the Editor's Award was presented he called her the editor of Soap Opera Magazine. Surely an embarassing blunder for Hogestyn and Leahey, even if it was an easy one to make. Live TV can be interesting, if nothing else.

Sharon Case (ex-Debbie, ATWT, now on Y&R) did win an award, in a surprise upset. Kudos to her. Who knew?

So, the controversy surrounding the Soap Opera [Digest] Awards will continue, with a lower ranking soap [GH] being chosen as a fan favorite and the highest Nielsen ranking soap [Y&R] losing out. The major disappointments, in my opinion, were Cynthia Watros (Annie, GL) losing as Favorite Villianess and Kim Zimmer (Reva, GL) losing as Favorite Lead Actress. The people who won may be talented, but don't have the years of wonderful scenes behind them. For GL fans, the show could have been worse. For ATWT fans, except for Kathryn's and Don's award, I felt the show was a total disappointment. Hopefully the Emmy awards (nominations announced in March) will be kinder to us ATWT and GL fans. Thanks to observant fans who notified me that clips of Blake and Ross, Rick and Abby, and Buzz and Jenna weren't shown during the GL couples montage. They flashed so fast, I didn't notice that all fan favorites weren't included. (3/3/98)
